A TRIBUTE TO
BEN WEIDER:
IFBB FOUNDER &
HONORARY LIFE PRESIDENT
Ben Weider, together with his brother Joe, created the International Federation of Bodybuilders, the "IFBB", in 1946 in Montreal, Canada. The first two National Affiliates were Canada and the U.S.A.
From 1946 to 1969, Ben Weider laid the foundation of growth and development, brick by brick, by traveling to over 90 countries around the world and by carefully selecting dedicated and professional officials to head the sport in each nation he visited. In 1970, these officials attended the first historic IFBB International Congress in Belgrade, Yugoslavia. Since then, Ben Weider and his worldwide family of dedicated officials have been "growing the sport".
Today, the IFBB is one of the world’s largest international amateur sport organizations, with National Affiliates in over 180 countries around the world.
The IFBB, now officially the "International Federation of Bodybuilding and Fitness", is a proud member of the General Association of International Sports Federations (GAISF) and the International World Games Association (IWGA) and is a Signatory to the World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA) Code.
In 2006, after 60 years at the healm, Ben Weider retired as President of the IFBB and passed the torch to Dr. Rafael Santonja of Madrid.
We are pleased to present this video tribute called "The Life and Times of Ben Weider", which originally aired on CBC-TV and CBC-NEWSWORLD on February 22, 1999.
