With Ben Weider’s sudden and untimely passing on October 17, 2008, the bodybuilding and fitness world began to deeply mourn the loss of the man who, among his many remarkable achievements, created the International Federation of Body Builders (IFBB) and, for over 60 years, watched it grow into one of the largest international sport federations in the world, with over 180 affiliated countries.
As letters of condolence and tributes poured in from all over the world, it was obvious that Ben Weider was a man much respected, admired and loved by many. People from every continent, from every country and from every walk of life offered their heartfelt condolences to the Weider and IFBB families.
Many wrote about how they first met Ben Weider. Others wrote wonderful anecdotes. Most described how Ben Weider had, in some immeasurable way, changed their lives for the good. The following words kept appearing over and over again — "He was a true gentleman." Ben Weider really did live by his motto … "In sport, there are no limitations, no barriers of race, religion, politics or culture. In sport, we are in touch with each other. Bodybuilding is important for Nation Building."
In memory of Ben Weider, our Founding Father, IFBBPRO.com would like to provide this opportunity for you to submit to us your personal tribute to Ben — an extraordinary person; a visionary and pioneer; a legend, leader and champion; a citizen of the world. You may send us a text-only tribute by the "Post a Comment" at the end of this page, or you may send a text and photographic tribute to IFBBPRO.com at tblinn@ifbbpro.com for publication on our website.
The following tributes are not in any particular order.
Some tributes are reprinted with the kind courtesy of IFBB.com.

From Arnold Schwarzenegger
Governor of California, USA
Mr. Olympia – 1970-1975, 1980
Ben Weider was one of the most amazing people I have ever known. He and his brother, Joe, grew up poor in Montreal, but through their vision, hard work and determination, became founding fathers of bodybuilding and the worldwide fitness revolution.
Ben was also a self-taught scholar and an expert on the life of Napoleon whose research and writing literally changed how historians view the notorious French leader.
Ben and Joe were like fathers to me, bringing me to America when I was a young man just making my way in the world. I never would have achieved the success I have enjoyed in life without them and they supported me in everything I have ever done.
I will miss Ben terribly. My thoughts and prayers go out to the entire Weider family.

Devastated, with a deep soul pain; I lost my best friend in life.
Behind us are more than 30 years of close friendship.
His guidance, trust, and support all these years and my relation with him has been a gift from God.
Ben has been like a father for me; and together with my parents, my mentor in life.
I joined him travelling all over the world; from Europe to Africa, from Asia to America, and I always admired his way to respect people regardless politics, races or religions.
Always generous, sensitive, respectful with everybody; he and his brother Joe influenced and guided millions of people to follow bodybuilding, fitness and healthy life style.
The moments, the talks, the experiences, the projects, the dreams we shared together are milestones and the best memories for me.
I was in Bali, attending the participation of bodybuilding in the Asian Beach Games of the Olympic Program; in our way to achieve his most appreciated sport dream; when the shocking news broke my heart.
Now, more than ever, with the support of all our dear colleagues in the IFBB Family, we will put all our energy to, following his life example, get for our sport, the IOC recognition.
I promise you, Ben; this day will come, and you will be with us, living in my heart and in the heart of the millions of your friends worldwide that are now, in their own language and religions praying for your eternal peace in heaven.

Over the years, I watched as Mr. Weider proudly witnessed the number of IFBB National Federations grow to over 180 countries around the world.
Through him, I met so many wonderful people who are now very close friends and colleagues.
For 40 years, I saw Mr. Weider deal with many problems; some of which were extremely complex. He was always fair-minded; he never got upset and never took anything personal. He had an innate sense of good sound judgment and was acutely sensitive to people’s feelings. He always said, "Never hold a grudge", which was a cornerstone of his character.
Everyone who ever met Ben Weider and spent time with him came away with having learned something and having been enriched by the experience.
I am eternally grateful to have known such an extraordinarily unique person.

From Jim Manion

Chairman, IFBB Professional League
I have known Ben Weider for over thirty years and from the beginning, Ben has always given me professional advice and guidance.
When the NPC was formed, he helped me to structure the organization and gave me the confidence by example to move forward and to never second guess a deliberated decision.
He trusted me and we had the utmost respect and friendship for each other.
I would hope that I am able to give our sport one-tenth of his dedication and will do my best to continue to carry on the life’s work of Ben; for without him there would be no NPC or IFBB Professional League as we know it today.
I am proud and honored to have been mentored and received the sincere friendship of Ben Weider – I will miss him deeply!
My sincere condolences to the entire Weider Family.

I feel truly blessed with the good fortune of having known Ben Weider for the past 23 years and, for the last 8 of these, of having worked closely with him on his two great passions – the IFBB and the INS.
We spoke often; almost daily it seemed. The calls would always begin with "Hi Tony! It’s Ben. How are you?" They would always end with a few words of praise and "Have a super day and remember, keep smiling!"
Twenty-three years ago, almost to the day, I sat in my room at the Ruby Foo Hotel, just down the road from Mr. Weider’s Montreal office. I had just been elected president of IFBB Canada and was anxiously awaiting my first meeting with the man I would later come to admire more than any other in my life.
Now I sit in a room in the same hotel, 23 years later, having just returned from Ben’s funeral. I’ll finally take the liberty here of calling him "Ben"; he had asked me to do so many years ago but I could never bring myself to call him anything but "Sir" or "Mr. Weider".
There are so many words I could use to describe Ben. To me, he was always kind, generous, caring, thoughtful, respectful, courteous, considerate, patient, understanding, wise, humble, honest, and decent. In the end, the one that mattered most to me personally was, and always will be, "fatherly".
That’s how I’ll choose to remember him.
And oh how I’ll miss those early morning conversations.

From Albert Busek
IFBB Vice President for Europe
Since the moment I learned about the passing of "my" longtime IFBB-President memories come up permanently.
On one hand there are so many fond memories to cherish forever, on the other hand there are the thoughts what made the Founder of the IFBB such a remarkable, great man.
And I asked myself many questions including the one about Ben’s greatest trait. There are so many that it is extremely difficult to select "numero uno".
Scrolling through my large and comprehensive bodybuilding photo archive it became even more difficult as there is a story to each of these photos. The one I picked for these lines was taken almost by the day 20 years before Ben’s passing.
From October 12-14, 1988, the IFBB had its Men’s World Championships in Brisbane/Australia. Until today I have the fondest memories of this fantastic event, organized by Paul and Carol Graham. It was a very special atmosphere of brotherhood amongst delegations from all over the world at one of nature’s jewels on our planet.
In the middle of all the work during the competition at the Open Air Complex of the WORLD EXPO 1988 I asked Ben and his Son Eric for a photo. As always they were as friendly as one can be and they were all smiles. But looking back these 20 years there is much more.
Besides the fact that Ben and Eric had one of the most remarkable father-son relations I have seen, they both have these very special human qualities of a straight forward character, loyalty, discipline and the focus on goals in life. Two good men of honour.
By all means Ben is a great Visionary, President, Historian, Father and Husband, but to me Ben’s greatest trait was his staying power to follow-through no matter how many challenges he had to overcome and how long it would take.
For a larger-than-life man like Dr. Ben Weider the greatest gift was his family and the blessing of a son, who was willing to take on the challenge to fulfill the expactations of his father no matter what it would take.
It turned out that Eric Weider has this great strength too and that he is following through in all areas of life as his father did.
I stopped immediately when this father-son photo popped up in my computer as I instantly thought about the last conversation I had with Ben on Olympia day 2008 in Las Vegas. We were in the middle of a four-eye-conversation when Rob Wilkins came into the room to hand over the cell-phone to Ben with the word: "It’s Eric". After they finished their conversation Ben handed the phone over to me and I was happy to tell Eric, how glad I am to see his father so energetic and active.
20 days later all of a sudden Ben passed away, but he will live on in the hearts of millions of people forever. My heart goes out to the family. My prayers too. Rest in peace, Ben.

It is with utmost sadness to know that we lost our legendary symbol, the founder of our great family, the IFBB; Nevertheless this is the way life goes and every person on earth will reach the same fate.
Ben Weider was not only the father, brother & friend; but he was also a very great talented sports leader whom we all learned a lot.
My deep regrets, pain, sympathy and condolences to every member in our great family, the IFBB.
He taught us how to love & respect each other, how to take care of each other & how to stand together to create such a great & beloved family, the IFBB.
He will be always in our heart, mind & spirit.
As long as we live, he will be with us. Ben Weider will NEVER DIE.

From Javier Pollock
IFBB Vice President for Central America and the Caribbean
After all the achievements, accolades, merits, and prestige are exposed, remembered and cherished one more time; improving what he initiated will be the best way to honor Ben Weider’s memory. Those worldwide enhancements are currently ongoing … and I invite all CACBBFF member nations to continue supporting these efforts.
On the eve of his interment, the memories of a dynamic and inspiring Canadian landing in San Juan, Puerto Rico, in the summer of 1972 are rushing back to my subconscious and storming like a vivid “PowerPoint” presentation. So much has transpired since he called me “friend” 36 years ago.
Given that it will be futile for me to find a spot where to start reciting my extensive connection with him; I will settle for PERSEVERANCE as one of his most enduring qualities. Even his detractors would agree that, without his intense determination, our sport would still be a sub-cultured pastime relegated to basements and dungeons.
Two hundred years from now, no one will remember the title winners from America, the Universe and Olympia; but they will remember my comrade Ben.
Needless to say, it was an honor for me to serve under his command and an unparallel lifetime experience. And although he will be justifiably missed, the strength of his spirit will remain with everyone he inspired.

Chairman, IFBB Judges Committee
IFBB Professional League Athlete Liaison [Europe]
IFBB Honorary Life President Dr. Ben Weider passed away. Polish Bodybuilding, Fitness & Powerlifting Federation received this sad news with great sorrow and pain.
We lost not only our founder and mentor but also our great friend and supporter. We remember difficult times of the “Cold War” when Dr. Weider crossed the “Iron Curtain” many times and using his outstanding diplomatic skills convinced our sport authorities to recognize bodybuilding and enter the IFBB.
Then, he helped us to get permission for organization of the first in the Soviet Block European Championships in Warsaw in 1986, followed by the 1991 World Men’s Championships and IFBB International Congress in Katowice.
The Weiders family lived in Poland for hundreds of years and emigrated to Canada at the beginning of the 20th century. Dr. Weider always remembered his roots and asked us to send him pictures from their native town of Kurow in South-East Poland. We always felt that his heart was close to this land.
We can only admire Ben’s skills for solving difficult problems and making continuous progress. He developed IFBB from two member-counties in 1946 to 184 countries in 2006. He arranged the IFBB recognition, first by GAISF in 1969 and then by the IOC (temporary) in 1998. He was also a successful businessman in nutrition industry and successful editor. He made most of his dreams come true and made his best to help us to make our dreams come true.
We have lost a great man, great friend and great patron. Now we can have only wonderful memories. He will forever be in our hearts.

On 19th October 2008 after the conclusion of the Int. Austria Cup in Vienna I was informed, that the father of Bodybuilding, founder and Hororary Life President of the IFBB Ben Weider has passed away on October 17th in his native Montreal, Canada. When I heard this terrible news I was in a state of shock and just could not believe it.
The death of Ben Weider is not only an immensely sad occurrence for the Sport of Bodybuilding and Fitness, but also the end of an era.
I have known Mr. Weider for more than 20 years and I consider him not only a wise man and passionate advocate for the Sport of Bodybuilding and Fitness, who developed this sport together with his brother Joe from an underground past time to a Sport, that even obtained (provisional) olympic recognition, a sport, that now is organised in over 170 countries of the world with an umbrella organisation (IFBB), that currently is one of the largest Sports Federations in the world, but also a true and trusted friend. Ben Weider was a man of principles, a man of honour, a dynamic and charismatic leader who never lost sight of continually elevating the sport of Bodybuilding and Fitness and advocating the Bodybuilding Life Style.
Personally I have much to be grateful to Ben, I last met him at the Mr. Olympia 2006 at which occasion we were having breakfast together at the Caesar’s Palace Hotel in Las Vegas.
I offer my most heartfelt condolences to Ben´s Family and thank him for his immense achievements for our sport and for having trust in me to be a part of the team to work for the sake of our beloved sport.

Ben Weider was a great man, mentor, and leader. We are all in his debt for both planting the seeds of the sport of bodybuilding and through the IFBB, nurturing it to where it is today, the foundation sport of all sports.
Athletes of all kinds depend on bodybuilding exercises to strengthen their bodies and prepare for competition. I have nothing but heartfelt gratitude for Ben and admiration for his tireless efforts to promote bodybuilding.
With Ben’s death, an era has passed. But his mission is not done. Bodybuilding is on the cusp of becoming an Olympic sport. I know that Ben would want nothing more than for us to carry on his mission and life work of educating others about bodybuilding and working together to elevate bodybuilding to international recognition as an Olympic sport. Let’s honor Ben by pushing ahead and making his dream a reality!
Thank you Ben for all you have done and the inspiration you have given us.
Ben had great admiration and respect for you, Rafael. Ben chose you to lead the IFBB, knowing that you would carry on its mission and his life work after he was gone. I believe that Ben chose wisely. There is nobody better suited than Rafael Santonja to lead the IFBB to the next level. Let me know how I can help you, in any way, my friend. You always have my full support and cooperation.

IFBB Patron
I have known Ben Weider in 1958 as bodybuilder and since then I have always remained in contact with him.
We become very good and close friend.
He told me precious suggestions and encouraged me to organize the men’s world championship of bodybuilding in 1974 in Verona (for the first time in italia), mister Olympia in Rimini 1989 and many other important events. We worked very hard … (together with all of you …), to develop all over the world credibility in bodybuilding sport and health life style.
I owe a lot to Ben Weider as man … as businessman … as sportsman and as Patron of this great IFBB family.
Many times in these 50 years he addressed me letters or faxes calling me "BROTHER". This is exactly what I feel … to have lost a brother …

From Dr. Bob Goldman
Chairman, IFBB Medical Commission
IFBB Professional League Medical Advisor
The death of Dr. Ben Weider, founder and former President of the IFBB, is a loss to us all. Ben was my mentor and our friendship spanned more than four decades. He was a great man. The world was enriched greatly by his being in it. I feel tremendous sadness at the loss of a person of such depth and breadth of character.
My first contact with Dr. Ben Weider was as a 12-year old interested in medicine. I wrote him in admiration of all that he had accomplished to that point in time and asked his advice on entering the health and medical field. To my astonishment, he answered me with a personal letter within days. Ben’s attention to detail and personal touch is legendary. So began a mentoring relationship lasting over 40 years. I was honored to be a student of Ben and he is responsible for the careers of so many. He was by far the most important mentor in my life and I know I am not alone here: He served as a dear friend, confidante, advisor, father figure and most importantly — a great teacher of life.
I think one of Ben’s finest accomplishments is in raising his son, Eric Weider, heir to the Weider dynasty. Eric possesses the same modesty, intelligence, warmth and leadership abilities as his father. I think this was one thing he was most proud of — his remarkable son, who I am so proud to have as my dear friend. His other great disciple is Dr. Rafael Santonja, the first new president of the IFBB in 60 years and Ben cultivated him as a son like Eric. The future of the IFBB is not only secure in his hands, but on its way to permanent Olympic recognition, an important lifelong goal of Ben’s.
Ben Weider was, is, and will remain, without question, the reason why I am what I am today. I have benchmarked all of my personal and professional life goals on what he and his brother Joe have accomplished. He was our father, older brother, dear friend and hero. I was fortunate to spend a bit of time with him at the Mr. Olympia 2008 event, which took placed just weeks before his passing. Every moment I have spent with Ben will be treasured.
Each of us should feel honored that Ben was a part of our lives, as this world was graced by his presence. He was a man of historical proportions and we will miss him very much. We will honor him and his memory by pushing forth his dreams.

From Prof. Dr. Eduardo H. De Rose
Special Advisor, IFBB Medical Commission
I met Ben Weider by the first time in 1996, when Rafael Santonja invited me to replace the late Prof. Manfred Donike as international anti-doping adviser of the IFBB. Body Building has already a long tradition of doing a control of doping in its world championships that started in 1986, following the intention of Ben to have a free doping sport.
Since then, I enjoyed the friendship of Ben in many General Assemblies, and in some visits I did in the headquarters in Montreal. It was a pleasure to speak with him, to receive the guidance of someone that knew the world of sports and its different cultures and tradition, and teach me how important is to respect the diverse aspects of it.
The seat of the IFBB was almost a church, and there was a true gentleman that received me as an old friend, invited me for lunch and discussed particularly three topics: his experience as officer of the II World War, the life and death of Napoleon and his sports and the Olympic Movement. This brought him in contact with President Samaranch and the respect of both great personalities, one by the other, was almost immediate.
I believe that in Turkey I had the opportunity, in one of the multiple Championships that we attend together, to understand him better because we used to walk in the city changing ideas and opinions. I will miss him very much, because he was a great person, a gentleman, an idealist that started a sport that was also a lifestyle. I know that now he is changing ideas with the international God of all religions, and speaking about how we can live better and longer even in the paradise.

IFBB Treasurer
The world of bodybuilding is in mourning. For us a father has gone away. A friend, a good and generous man. Benjamin Weider has left us, on Friday, 17 of October. Nevertheless, his spirit and his legacy will be for always with us, since the great personalities pass away, but their work lasts and their presence is for always between those who the pleasure and the privilege have had to know them.
Ben Weider has been a horseman in all the ample meaning of the word. I had the enormous pleasure, of which I am proud, to have met him personally on several occasions. He was an extraordinary being who infected enthusiasm and respect and who loved and believed in everything did. Without a doubt, he has been a gentleman, a visionary, a fighter and a leader who gained the respect by those who surrounded him. A man who still in his later days, continued working for the love of the sport of bodybuilding.
The legacy that Ben Weider leaves us, in addition to the memory of his person, is the reality of the International Federation of Bodybuilding (IFBB) that he founded, with his brother Joe, in 1946. A federation with more than sixty years of history of recognitions and fight for a sport that, like the magic of dreams, is a magnificent reality thanks to his work and his dedication during the six decades in which it has presided over it: a unique case in the history of the sport.
Where he wants that you are, friend and teacher Ben Weider; by all your effort and dedication, it is hour to rest and I wish you peace. We will never forget to you. Until always Benjamin Weider OC, CStJ, CQ, PhD.

Nobody else could have done it and it is he we should all thank for making bodybuilding the global sport it is. He dominated the bodybuilding landscape like a giant for over 60 years and there will never be another Ben Weider. Bodybuilding and the world couldn’t be so lucky.
All who came in contact with Ben Weider during his remarkable and unique life recognized him as a true statesman, and as a visionary who always brought class and clarity to the ideals in which he believed. For me knowing him – and him letting me get to know him over the last 26 years – has been an unforgettable experience. Like the millions of others he touched and influenced I will miss him greatly, but will forever be thankful that our paths crossed and that I did get to know him, albeit too briefly.

It is widely believed that a person is measured by the contributions they make during their time here on earth. In the case of Ben Weider, he has touched thousands of lives, including my own. Throughout his 85 year journey, Ben transformed lives and inspired all who knew him. He was a leader, a mentor and an educator. Ben lived his life with a sense of balance, purpose and character that few could dare to reach. The guidance and wisdom that he gave to the world has assured us that Ben Weider will live well beyond his 85 years.

When I first developed an interest in bodybuilding, I had no idea it was an actual sport. As my interest grew, so did my knowledge. I discovered that Arnold, Lou, Franco, Sergio, Larry, Lee—all my favorite bodybuilders in the magazines—were professionals in an organization known as the IFBB. And one name rang out loud and clear, time and time again: Ben Weider, President of the IFBB. Ben brought bodybuilding to the masses. If not for his tireless efforts to showcase the best physiques in the world, I suspect many of us would not be where we are today. He took an obscure, underground sport and transformed it into the world wide phenomenon it is today. It’s a marvel of vision, dedication, integrity, and most of all, love. Ben’s passion and love for bodybuilding never wavered. It never dimmed. He never ceased in his efforts to bring bodybuilding to the public, and for this we owe him our eternal gratitude and respect.
On a personal note, I am forever grateful to Ben for the encouragement, support, and guidance he gave to a then 36 year old preparing to run the greatest bodybuilding show in the world. It was an honor to have his blessing from day one. But his wisdom wasn’t confined merely to the world of bodybuilding. No, it extended to all aspects of life. He offered advice on family and personal matters that I value and follow to this day. Thank you Ben for being an inspiration not only to me, but the entire bodybuilding community you helped create. You will always be remembered.

The bodybuilding and fitness community worldwide has been changed by the life and personal dedication of Ben Weider. His tremendous commitment and great leadership skills created one of the largest sports international sports federations in the world. The great variety and creativity that characterized his life also found expression in his love of and scholarship concerning Napoleon. Ben’s research and writing in this and other fields are among the many significant contributions that will long survive his life. He will be sadly missed and long-remembered.

Ben Weider loved the sport of bodybuilding. No one worked harder, or with more passion, to establish bodybuilding as a respected avenue of athletic achievement.
He had great respect and admiration for all people involved within the sport, and was happy to take the time to give words of encouragement and support to those at any level.
He lived his life with honor and dignity, and we were proud to regard him as a friend.

It was Plato who said, “A hero is born among a hundred, a wise man is found among a thousand, but an accomplished one might not be found even among a hundred thousand men.” Ben Weider was an accomplished man of the rarest and very highest order. What he did to spread the gospel and glories of competitive bodybuilding around the world stands as one of the great accomplishments in sports development. It will resonate far, far into the future.
Bodybuilding has been in my blood since my teen years, and Mr. Weider could sense that about me from the start. It was my high honor and great privilege to have been personally chosen by him to serve as Legal Counsel to the IFBB. Working with him over the years has been a joy. I was always impressed by his calm and measured approach, and by his wit, warmth and wisdom. I will miss our many telephone talks and the time we spent at bodybuilding expos and competitions. Ben Weider was, without question, a true gentleman.

With the passing of Ben Weider bodybuilding has lost it’s most important elder spokesman. Ben was not only one of the “Brother’s of Iron” he was the father of the entire amateur and pro bodybuilding movement worldwide. He loved bodybuilding and because of his love we have all been blessed being recipients of all that has evolved from the sport.
In addition to his love of bodybuilding Ben Weider had a love of history. He was a foremost authority on Napoleon Bonaparte and possessed one the world’s finest collections of Napoleon artifacts. In fact, in the days following his death a great deal of his collection was donated to a museum where he was to have spoken. As a history major in college I shared Ben’s love of history and fascination with Napoleon.
Some years ago I traveled to Montreal for a karate tournament and made it a point to visit Ben and the late Harris Kagan at the Montreal office. Ben took great pride in showing me his collection and we had a great time talking history. I brought Ben up a Life Magazine from the 60’s I had saved as a child with a picture of Napoleon at the Battle of Waterloo. This was obviously not an expensive collectable, but Ben treated it as if it was worth a million dollars and made me feel honored that I had given it to him. Whenever I would see him at the Arnold’s or the Olympia he would always remember that visit and the magazine. I will miss Ben’s huge presence as the elder statesman of our sport and I will also miss him for his friendship as a fellow student of history.
My deepest sympathy goes out to his family, all of whom showed such strength at his funeral service. Louis, Eric and Mark’s words especially showed the feelings of proud sons who loved their father so much and were so grateful to have called him dad.
Ben you will be missed, but not forgotten. Your family, friends, and colleagues will carry on your work because you have chosen and taught them well.

What can truly be said of a man who embodies the very spirit of bodybuilding? Since the 1940’s, Ben and Joe have devoted their lives to the advancement and widespread acceptance of bodybuilding by way of magazines, competitions, exercise equipment, supplements. As it was Ben’s wish and prediction many years ago, bodybuilding (at all levels) has become the most practiced pastime around the world.
I was fortunate to have met with Ben on more than a few occasions, the last one being the 2008 Mr. Olympia. I’ll always remember the words of encouragement, and the IFBB Achievement Award which Ben presented to me (along with Jim Manion, Dan Solomon, Robin Chang and Rob Wilkins) for our contributions to the sport of Bodybuilding. Coming from Ben himself, this award will be among my most treasured memories, and a promise was made to Ben that we will carry on the life’s work that he started so many years ago. Ben Weider wasn’t a PART of Bodybuilding he IS Bodybuilding.

What I admired most about Ben Weider was the fact that he changed the “politics” of bodybuilding in the US and the world. Because he grew up surrounded by anti-Semitism, he knew what prejudice felt like and in creating the IFBB, he created an organization that judged the competitor not on the color of his skin or his religion but on who had the best physique. Before the IFBB, it was impossible to be a Mr. America if you were of color or Jewish, Ben changed that. Few of us can make that kind of difference in the world – Ben did!

How much can one say about Ben Weider? Quite a bit. I have known Ben for well over 30 years due to my father, NPC President Jim Manion.
I have a lot of memories of Ben over the years and in many countries around the world. The past few years, Ben had asked if I would be able to contribute photos to the IFBBPro.com website? Of course, I told him it would be my pleasure to help him in any way I could. Then again, Ben’s interest in photography didn’t surprise me. I remember sitting next to him at the 1988 IFBB Men’s World Amateur Bodybuilding Championships in Brisbane, Australia, when he started asking me about the camera equipment he saw in my camera bag sitting in front of me. We must have chatted about photography off and on for the next hour in between me taking photos of the competition.
Of course, I can reminisce about so many things related to Ben but one of the most important I can think of is that he always had time to say “Hello”. There would be times that I would be taking photos, be it backstage at the Olympia, in an IFBB press pit somewhere or shooting candids at an expo, like the Arnold Expo, and even though I knew Ben was somewhere at the contest, I didn’t necessarily know where. But if he saw me first he would make it a point to come over to me just to say “Hello” and ask how I was doing. Trust me, I know that Ben was just as busy a person as my father is at these contests but that never stopped him.
More recently, due to working with IFBBPro.com, he would make sure to thank me for my photos for a particular contest or contests. And trust me, he knew what contests I provided the photos for because he would name-check them. It wasn’t just a generalization.
The last time I saw Ben, as did many people, was at this year’s Olympia. We were off to the side of the stage on Saturday night and he was discussing with my father the tragedy of what had happened to head expediter Steve Stone the prior day. I was able to get a few photos of Ben with my father and step-mother along with IFBB President Rafael Santonja and his wife. I was able to get a quick word in with Ben before he was off to more business with the contest. Needless to say, I was shocked to hear the news of his passing a few weeks later. My sympathies go out to his immediate family and of course to his IFBB family. He will be greatly missed.

I grew up a skinny kid and can recall buying Muscle & Fitness and FLEX to learn about getting stronger and bigger. It would anxiously await the next issue so I could find out who won the last show.
It has been an honor and privilege to now be part of the industry I once followed as a fan. If it wasn’t for Mr. Weider and his dedication to the sport of bodybuilding, who knows where I’d be today. I admired his work ethic and commitment to the sport.
I feel very fortunate to receive a letter from Mr. Weider earlier this year thanking me for my contributions to the industry. Thanks to Rob Wilkins I was able to meet Mr. Weider at this year’s Mr. Olympia contest. It almost didn’t happen due to our busy schedules but thankfully I had a few moments to talk with him in person about the web site, photography and the show. He was very much aware of what was happening in the industry and personally thanked me for being part of it. That was a very special and touching moment for me. Little did I know it would be the last time I’d see him.
Thank you Mr. Weider for all you’ve done. You created opportunities for thousands of people and I appreciate being one of those individuals.

I met Mr. Ben Weider for the first time in 1986 at the IFBB Men’s World Amateur Bodybuilding Championships in Tokyo, Japan. Mr. Weider was very gracious from that first moment through the 20+ years that I had the pleasure of being associated with him. He truly embodied everything that the Olympic movement stands for. He brought so many countries and people from all cultures, religions and politics together showing that sport does transcend these areas and brings people together for a common cause. The sport has truly lost its greatest champion.

It is with a heavy heart that I join millions of people worldwide in mourning the passing of Ben Weider. It was my sincere honor to have worked with Ben since 1993, serving the past two years as his Executive Assistant.
From his humble beginnings in Montreal, Canada, Ben, along with his brother and best friend, Joe, encouraged, inspired and mentored millions of people worldwide to take part in the bodybuilding lifestyle. A true diplomat, he skillfully used bodybuilding and as a vehicle to break down social stereotypes and build a brotherhood and family between people from various races, religions and political beliefs.
Many of us only get to read about people of Ben’s caliber and achievements in history books not work directly with them. But I was fortunate to work beside him. At 85 years young, Ben was still full of life and planning dozens of future projects that would have made a person half his age exhausted. Simply, he loved life and working with people made him happy.
A public figure but a private man, Ben’s family and friends will surely miss his kindness, loyalty, sensitivity and down to earth good nature. Some of my favorite memories of Ben also include his long time Executive Assistant and current IFBB President, Dr. Rafael Santonja. With a twinkle in his eye, Ben loved to share funny stories related to the many adventures he and Rafael had experienced in over 30 years of traveling together to help grow the sport of bodybuilding and the IFBB.
A recipient of over 66 awards and decorations, (to include a 1984 Noble Peace Prize nomination), when Ben was promoted to the rank of the Commander in the Order of St. John, he generously invited my wife Amy and me to attend the private ceremony held in the Canadian Parliament Building in Ottawa, Canada. We were sincerely touched by his willingness to allow us to share this special occasion with him and his family.
I would also like to mention the heartfelt appreciation Ben had for military personnel. Since 2001, he provided nearly 5,000 complimentary tickets for the Olympia Weekend to members of the military as a sign of respect and appreciation for all they do in preserving our freedom. He caringly referred to them as his special guests.
This past summer, I asked Ben, "Which of your achievements brought you the most personal satisfaction?" After a brief moment, He replied, "In 1975, I was successful in making a crack at the racist apartheid system in Pretoria, South Africa as I insisted on shared accommodations and equal treatment for all athletes participating in the IFBB world championships. This is the first time that South African government had agreed to treat black athletes like whites and their approval of my wishes made me very happy."
It has been my privilege to have known this man of honor, integrity and kindness. I will deeply miss my mentor and friend, Ben Weider

I was greatly saddened to hear about the passing of Ben Weider. Just a few weeks before, at the 2008 Olympia, Ben and Joe were there, showing their dedication to the sport’s best contest. I have had great respect for Ben, in building up an organization that is in over 180 countries around the world, in tough circumstances.
Ben always showed great respect to me, and I was honoured in helping out whenever I could. One of my favorite moments was when Ben acknowledged me at the podium of the 2007 Mr. Olympia, as doing something good for the sport. Still, during a quick meeting at an Olympia, I realized just how respected and superb Ben was, not only in terms of founding and flourishing with the IFBB, but in terms of his charitable and donations to various causes, including to the state of Israel, and more.
Thank you very much for the privilege of knowing who the man was behind the presidency of the IFBB. You will be missed.

2008 Mr. Olympia
I was stunned to hear the tragic news of Ben Weider’s death. It was only three weeks before his untimely death that I was honored to receive my most distinguished award from Mr. Weider.
I was 20 years old when I began bodybuilding. I was a young father and had to work full-time to take care of my responsibilities. When I decided to finally pursue it as a career, I committed myself to a lifestyle, sport and profession that Ben Weider and his brother Joe Weider created. Bodybuilding has taught me diligence and perseverance.
Ben Weider took a vision and made it a sport that has given me more than a career. Like so many others that are drawn to the sport of bodybuilding, I am honored to say that I feel blessed to be part of the IFBB. Ben Weider and his brother have established an organization that has given me stars to reach for and the belief that even that which seems impossible, is possible!
I am honored to have met such an exceptional being like Ben Weider. I also feel privileged to have received the 2008 Mr. Olympia title and award from Ben Weider before his unexpected death.
I wish to extend my sincere condolence to the Weider family. The world has lost someone very special. As Mr. Olympia, I will strive to represent the world of bodybuilding, and the legacy both Ben and Joe created, in a manner I know would make Ben Weider proud!

The founding father of Bodybuilding, a great visionary, a social activist and intellectual and an outstanding administrator Late Dr Ben Weider was my Guardian, my benefactor, my mentor is physically no more with us but we can feel his presence and support forever.
I got in touch with him in the year 1997, I casually wrote him a letter and surprisely I received his reply with in two weeks and this correspondence relation ship turned up in a relation of true affection and emotion. I briefed him about the charity work of my friend Dorian Yates, which he is doing in India along with me , since 1997 through Dorian Yates Charitable Gym, Mr Weider asked me to send him the relevant papers and he immediately decided to Honor Dorian with IFBB gold medal award at the Mr Olympia 2000(Las Vegas) where he also invited me, he called Dorian one of the best goodwill ambassador of the Sport, who was contributing humanity beside the sport. He always use to Honor talent and merit in such a way.
Recently in January 2008, he invited me at Montreal as his special guest and he arranged everything for me during this trip, he also awarded me with the IFBB Achievement Award for my contribution towards Bodybuilding.
There is one memorable thing about his sense of humor, and down to earth attitude when I reached at the office and the receptionist informed him that Amit Swami has arrived, he came out from the office to receive me, he was looking some papers at the self and he asked me to sit down but I was standing because I didn’t want to sit before he sit as my expression of respect to him, then he asked me to come his side and said that, “Amit can you sit on my chair for a moment”, I was confused and he again asked me for this and I sit down on his chair and he immediately replied "now I understand why you didn’t wanted to sit on another because your eyes are on my chair only". I immediately jump and sit on the another chair and after that we were laughing like anything.
On last 15th of Oct2008 I received his good wishes mail as I have been elected as the Asst Secretary-General of ABBF, this was his last day when he came to the office, In this mail he expressed his blessings and good wishes as usual and his faith in the capability and loyalty of Datuk Paul Chua Secretary-General of ABBF. In fact on 18th I received a special certificate of Excellence, which he sent me via UPS and I wanted to thank him for this great gesture but unfortunately he departed to heaven, it was a great shock for me and I couldn’t believe this, but I know that his blessings will always remain with us and such great souls never dies. He is immortal forever. For me it is a irreparable loss because he use to advice me for everything for my business, my family matters etc.
From last four years on his birthday, we organized Dr Ben Weider Award function on 1st of Feb to Honor to the best people from the various walk of life with Ben Weider Award for their positive contribution towards society, it may be doctor, bureaucrat, social worker, educationist etc. It will remain same till i alive and it becomes a moral duty of all of us to go ahead on the path of life which he showed to us with the same sprit and stride. We are too late to express our feelings on the sad demise of Mr. Ben Weider, the Father of Modern Body Building but it was a bad luck that we got this sad news today itself. It is a great loss to the Body Building World. No doubt Mr. Weider will not be with us but his inspiration is always there for the lovers of Body Building . When we met Mr. Paul Chua some years back in Jalandhar (Punjab) India , he told us a lot about the contribution of Mr. Weider for the promotion of Body Building .
We on behalf of hundreds of upcoming Body Builders express our grief & sorrow. He will always be remembered. May God grant the departed soul peace!

A fearless and undying leader in the bodybuilding industry it can go without saying that all we are today would never be without the masterful hand and artistry of Ben Weider”.
Ben Weider created the multi million dollar industries we now call the modern day bodybuilding era with Brother Joe. Together Ben Weider and brother Joe made the magic come alive. Ben opened more doors for more people than we all collectively could not accomplish in many life times.
We owe Ben a debt of thanks for his perseverance, determination, Tánaistà and staying power.
Thank you for your counsel and mentorship Ben. We hope for a safe passage!

There are few men who take residence in ones memory and are never dislodged from the lofty post one puts in the life of great men such as Ben Weider. I first met him in 1948 in the family home on Colonial Avenue in Montreal. I have been a fan, a customer and I hope not presumtiouly an associate and friend. Mr. Weider , to me and to many Canadians involved in body building, men such as Joffre L’Heureux, Ed Theriault, Leo Robert, Alan Paivio and Tony Lanza who were longtime boosters of the Weider Brothers. Ben Weider was an outstanding example of what determination, good will and personal charm could accomplish regardless of the foundations of life.Love, respect and devotion to an ideal are the greatest accomplishments…factors which have paved the road to the great Weider Empire.
Sincerely
