Lee Haney Receives Ben Weider Lifetime Achievement Award

Just a few months before the passing of Ben Weider, the IFBB’s co-Founder and Honorary Life President gave his blessing for an annual award that would honor those members of the bodybuilding community who have helped set the highest possible standard. This year’s recipient was 8-time Mr. Olympia, Lee Haney. The presentation was made on July 17th in Tampa, Florida as part of the 2010 “Pro Bodybuilding Weekly Championships”.
As images of Lee Haney were played on a large video monitor above the stage, host Dan Solomon gave an emotional tribute celebrating a body of work that includes success on stage, on television, and in the community. Haney’s role as one of bodybuilding’s greatest ambassadors was further cemented when President Bill Clinton appointed him as Chairman of the President’s Council on Physical Fitness.
As the crowd at the Tampa Bay Performing Arts Center rose to its feet, Solomon informed the fans that the award is presented “on behalf of the late Ben Weider, the Weider family, NPC President and IFBB Pro League Chairman Jim Manion, MSgt (ret) Rob Wilkins and contest promoter Tim Gardner.
Following the presentation, Jim Manion shared his personal feelings about Lee. “I've been around the bodybuilding community for a long time. There are very few people who have done more to promote the positive message of bodybuilding than Lee Haney. He has been a global ambassador for the sport and I am proud to call him a friend. We can all learn a lot from Lee's on-going commitment to excellence, in all aspects of our lives. He is a great champion both on and off the bodybuilding stage."
Joining Lee Haney, Dan Solomon and Tim Gardner on stage for the presentation was the evening’s co-host Bob Cicherillo and 2009 honoree Rich Gaspari.
